Vanessa Lumpkin, LMHC

Licensed Mental Health Counselor #15949
A.R.T. Certified Therapist

My specialties are working with individuals and families who may have lost direction in life and need help finding their way back on their path.  I also specialize in helping those that live everyday with some sort of struggle.  This includes struggles with eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders and even those individuals that struggle with poor habits and decision making which causes a disturbance in daily living.

What is your main goal when working with a client?

My main goal in working with clients is to help them develop insight into their own life so they can develop an awareness of their actions and behavior. I also focus on helping individuals be the best version of themselves they can be, the person they are supposed to be.

What is your approach and what methods do you employ?

My approach is to really get to know each client.  I like to get to the depth of who they are and identify behavioral patterns and thinking patterns that have developed.  Together, we figure out what has been working for them and what has not been working for them.  We then work, by use of various therapeutic techniques, to propel them into a more rewarding and more productive future.

What age groups do you most often work with?

The age groups that are my strengths are adolescents through middle-aged adults.

Are you passive or active in the session, what can a client typically expect sessions to be like while working with you?

I take a more active role in a counseling session.  There is a method to everything I do when working with clients.  My goal is to make sure the client leaves with something more than they came in with.  This may be more insight, more wisdom, a new revelation, more strength, a helpful resource, a new sense of self or hope.  A client can expect to challenge themselves when working with me.  If a client is committed to change something in their life, I commit myself to walk with them on their journey.

What is your background and what are your credentials?

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. I established a professional career in the insurance industry as a Business Analyst and Contract Analyst.  However, having always feeling led to be a helping professional, I also volunteered my time working with incarcerated youth in a juvenile detention facility.  When given the opportunity to change careers, I immediately began to pursue my goal as a mental health professional.

What is the reason you decided to get into counseling?

I decided to become a counselor to help people.  I believe all people deserve to be at peace.  Dealing with my own struggles and painful seasons, and being able to overcome them, as difficult as it was, strengthened me and has encouraged me to want to help others uncover their own place of peace, healing and strength.

Tell us about your education.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Ashford University. I also have a Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. Both of my degrees in higher education allowed me to learn and grow as a person and professional, so I can confidently delve into the seemingly unseen parts of a person’s life, including my own. This level of learning excites me and has committed me to being a life-long learner. I recently completed training and certification for Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). For more information about ART please click here. As another way of reaching people, clients or potential clients can also stay connected to me through my blog page thought-therapy.org.
